In the night I felt it. A great nothing. Waverunner had stopped. I rolled sweet nat off my chest and sat up looking at jaz sitting as I was. I had moved so now nat too was sitting.
"We are not moving, my Jarl" The sweet soft voice spoke in the dark. "Aye mine, we are in a still. let yourself not dread as there is simply no wind." I bid my girls. "Have no fear."
This I said but knew far better! I knew the lack of wind would mean becoming lost to the whim of Thassa. Twas the wind itself that gave us direction. Now it is Thassa and her currents. Where would we be when again the winds come?
I dressed and went to the deck bidding my girls sleep sweet. Then on deck I saw Mike, My second was as I rushing to get soundings and loose the anchors to hold us. I took readings from the stars and set them to my charts as my men worked to hold position. Glancing about I saw my own racing with girls to light candles and torches. To chase the dark from the decks even stringing oil lamps on the masts. Nat brought tea to me as marked my chart and I heard jaz singing below me in the galley.
I should have thought. For as I, sailors they, my two gifts from unseen gods were sailors and Pirates as well. Thassa had found their souls and the winds sung to their spirits. Alvor came then from below his smile bright singing praises to the gods and I that my jaz had baked pies and tea had been brewed for them fresh. Night watch had never had it this good.
How could they sleep? My two, my pair, my beautiful sailors. The girls, mine, like the others aboard, had felt as I do, our ship be still as the loss of wind.
