The sun was slowly setting and he could tell that the light was slowly disappearing outside but all seemed to be quiet. Perhaps the note was just to scare him enough to keep him from going outside and it worked. He had no desire to step foot outside after something had tried to get into the cabin the night before. He reheated his coffee and was heading to the living room to try and relax in front of the fireplace when he heard it. It was very soft at first- tap, tap, tap. At first he paid it no mind thinking the note had gotten into his head but then he heard it again, this time much louder and more persistent. He froze in his tracks as he heard a familiar voice, one he had not heard in years…it was his brother. “Hello, is anyone there? Are you there Jake?” the voice was very convincing and for a brief moment he thought perhaps it was his brother but then how would he know how to find him if no one else did. He chose to ignore the voice, setting down his coffee and covering his ears to try to block it out.

“Go away” he shouted while sinking to the floor and holding onto his head just wanting the night to be over and for morning to come. The voice went quiet for a bit and he thought perhaps whatever it was decided to leave but then it changed to something more desperate and raw.

“Please help me,I am begging you. It is after me and I have nowhere else to go.” He closed his eyes tighter trying so hard to heed the warning on the note but he was slowly losing his grip on reality and he was still a man who was filled with empathy for the suffering of others. The warnings, the notes, all of it did not matter as all he could think about in his mind was that his brother was in trouble and needed his help. It was going to be a risk he would have to take or he would regret it for the rest of his life. He jumped to his feet and lunged for the door, throwing back the lock and flinging the door open expecting to see his brother standing there but there was nothing, there was nothing but an empty space but there was a grey fog creeping up the steps slowly morphing into a large being, a shadow that seemed to fill in the entire space in front of him. Long arms slowly extended towards him as red eyes suddenly appeared and before even a word or a scream could escape his lips the hands grasped onto the front of his overalls and yanked him off his feet and pulled him in, enveloping him till everything went black.

Hank hummed to himself as he drove up the dirt road to the cabin, excited and intrigued at the opportunity for the new job he had been offered. He was ready to make the money and save up for the vacation he wanted to take with his girlfriend. He told her that once he had saved enough money he would return home. The cabin looked so quaint and perfect and he smiled to himself as he got out of the car and closed the door. There was no sign of anything being out of place and the door to the front of it was made of perfectly stained oak with a white envelope taped to the front of it. He set down his bag on the porch and opened up the envelope trembling with excitement as he pulled out the folded piece of paper.

“The last mechanic did not follow the rules and he is now gone. Rules are important. Your first day at the factory starts at 8 am and you will be there till 4 pm. It is vital that you follow the rules.

Welcome home Hank”
