The great hall quiets as the outer doors groan open.
Ortossi is already at his post by the high seat, spear grounded, eyes fixed on the entrance. Two younger guardsmen flank the doorway at his curt nod. He does not trust merchants who arrive after the 10th Ahn — too late for honest trade.
Lady Zoe sits upon the high seat, robes arranged perfectly, veil drawn. Only her eyes show — cool, measuring. She lifts one gloved hand slightly, a signal.
Sara hurries forward with a tray — two goblets of paga for the guest, one of water for her Mistress. She kneels smoothly at the foot of the dais, head bowed, tray held steady. Ortossi gives her the briefest approving glance. Good girl. She is learning.
Into the hall strides the merchant — a stout man of the White Caste? No, Yellow — Merchant Caste, by his saffron-trimmed robes. Oiled beard, heavy coin pouch at his belt, and behind him, two porters carrying a long, cloth-wrapped crate.
He bows deeply to Zoe.
"Most gracious Lady Zoe," he proclaims, "I am Vartius of Ar, and I have braved the Vosk road to bring you something no other House in this city possesses."
Zoe's voice is calm, regal: "Speak, Vartius of Ar. My time is coin, and you spend it."
Vartius claps his hands. The porters set down the crate and pull away the cloth — revealing a caged sleens? No — a set of rare Turian wines? Or...
Ortossi steps forward, hand tightening on his spear. "Hold. The crate will be inspected before it approaches the Mistress."
Sara glances up just for an instant, curiosity flickering across her face before she lowers her eyes again.
What does the crate hold, traveler? And who are you in this hall — a guard under Ortossi, a scribe beside Lady Zoe, the merchant Vartius himself, or a hidden observer?
Ortossi descends the three steps from the dais, his sandals slapping softly on the stone. He circles the crate slowly.
"Open it," he orders the porters.
Vartius smiles too widely. "Careful, Captain — the contents are... delicate. And very valuable."
The porters pry the lid. Inside, nestled in straw, are not weapons, not wine — but a dozen small, exquisite glass vials from distant Cos, each filled with shimmering perfumes, and beneath them, folded silks the color of sunset.
A murmur ripples through the hall. Such luxuries are rare this close to the Vosk.
Lady Zoe leans forward slightly. Even behind her veil, her interest is plain.
Sara, still kneeling with the tray, catches the scent as the breeze lifts it — jasmine and something spicier. Her eyes widen for half a breath. She has not smelled such things since her father's house fell.
Ortossi picks up one vial, holds it to the light, then sniffs it suspiciously. He is no connoisseur — he is looking for poison, for hidden compartments.
"No false bottom," he grunts to Zoe. "It is as it appears, Mistress."
Zoe rises. Every eye follows her.
"Vartius of Ar," she says, descending to stand before the crate, Sara quickly rising to follow with the tray and then kneeling again at her Mistress's side. "You bring pretty things. But pretty things do not pay guards or feed a House. Why come to me?"
Vartius bows lower. "Because, Lady... I do not want coin."
Ortossi's spear shifts. "Then what?"
"I want... sanctuary," Vartius says quietly. "And in exchange, the exclusive trade rights to my Cosian contacts. But I am being followed. Men of another House —"
As if on cue, a commotion echoes from the courtyard outside. Steel clashes. A guardsman shouts.
Ortossi snaps to attention. "To the doors! Sara — stay with your Mistress!"
Sara sets the tray down with trembling hands and moves close to Zoe's side, head bowed but heart pounding.
Zoe's voice cuts through the noise, cold and clear: "Ortossi. Bring me whoever dares spill blood on my threshold. Alive, if possible."
What do you do as the courtyard erupts?
The doors slam open — not by an enemy, but by a young guardsman, breathless, blood on his sleeve.
"Captain! Three men — colors hidden — tried to force the side gate! We hold them in the courtyard!"
Ortossi is already moving. "You two — with me. You — stay with Lady Zoe."
He points at the oldest guardsman, a veteran named Marlus, who takes position in front of Zoe and Sara, spear leveled at the main doors.
Ortossi strides out, cloak billowing. The sounds flood in: shouting, the ring of steel, the snarling of a chained sleen in the kennels awakened by the noise.
Inside, the hall is tense silence.
Vartius has gone pale. He wrings his hands. "You see? You see, Lady? They follow me even here!"
Lady Zoe does not look at him. She looks at the doors. Her voice is low, meant only for those near.
"Sara."
Sara startles. "Yes, Mistress?"
"That perfume — the vial Ortossi held. Bring it to me."
Trembling, Sara rises, retrieves the small glass vial from the crate, and kneels to present it with both hands, head down.
Zoe takes it, unstoppered it, and inhales. Then, to everyone's surprise, she dabs a single drop behind her own ear — a Free Woman, perfuming herself like a... she stops, aware of Marlus watching.
"It is genuine Cosian," she murmurs. "Worth a small fortune."
A scream from outside — then silence. Heavy footsteps return.
Ortossi re-enters, dragging a struggling man by the collar. His nose is broken, his tunic torn. Two guardsmen haul in another, unconscious.
Ortossi throws his captive to the floor before Zoe's dais.
"One fled," he reports grimly. "This one talks, or I feed him to the sleen."
The captive spits blood and glares up at Zoe. Then his eyes flick to Vartius... and to Sara.
Sara freezes. She knows that face.
"Mistress," she whispers urgently, forgetting herself for a moment, "I — I know him. He was —"
Zoe turns sharply. "Speak, girl."
Who is he, Sara?
Sara's voice is barely a breath, but in the silent hall everyone hears it.
"He was... a guard. In my father's house. Before it fell."
The captive's eyes narrow. Recognition dawns, cruel and amused.
"Little Sara," he rasps, blood on his teeth. "Scribe's whelp. I remember you fetching wine for your father's table. Now you fetch it on your knees. Fitting."
Ortossi's spear butt slams into the man's shoulder. "You will speak to the Mistress, not to her."
The man grunts in pain but laughs. "Your Mistress? She shelters a viper, Captain."
Lady Zoe rises slowly. The room holds its breath.
"Explain," she commands.
Vartius steps forward, sweating. "Lady, pay him no mind, he lies to save his skin —"
"Silence," Zoe snaps, without looking at him. "Let he speak."
The captive lifts his head proudly. "Vartius does not seek sanctuary. He seeks a buyer. Those vials? Stolen. From my master — Relian, of the House of Cernus. Vartius robbed him on the Vosk road and fled here. We were sent to reclaim what is ours."
A lie? A truth? Vartius is shaking his head violently. "No! No, Lady, Cernus is a tyrant, he —"
Ortossi looks between them, hand tight on his spear. His eyes flick to Zoe, waiting for her judgment.
Zoe looks down at Sara, who is still kneeling, pale and trembling.
"Sara," Zoe says softly, dangerously. "You knew him, yet you did not speak until now. Did you know this?"
Tears threaten in Sara's eyes. "No, Mistress! I swear by the Priest-Kings, I only knew his face, not his errand! Please —"
The hall waits. Outside, the wind moves through the courtyard. The perfume still hangs sweet in the air, now turned sour.
Zoe lifts her chin.
"Ortossi — chain Vartius as well. Both men will be held in the lower cells until I discern truth."
Vartius cries out as guards seize him. "Lady! Mercy! The trade rights, the Cosian contact —"
But Zoe has already turned away, her robes whispering.
She pauses beside Sara, who is bowed so low her forehead nearly touches the stone.
"We will speak of your silence later, girl."
She ascends to her seat.
Ortossi barks orders, the prisoners are dragged away, the crate of perfume and silk is sealed under guard.
And Sara remains kneeling alone in the center of the great hall...
Do you step forward to plead for Sara, to interrogate the prisoners with Ortossi, or to counsel Lady Zoe in private?
Lady Zoe gestures with two fingers — dismissing all but you.
"Come."
Marlus and the guards withdraw. Ortossi hesitates at the great double doors, his eyes lingering on Sara — still kneeling on the cold stone — then on you.
"Mistress," he rumbles, "shall I post a guard inside your council chamber?"
"No, Ortossi. Wait without. And take the girl — have her wait in the antechamber. I will deal with her after."
Sara rises shakily, head bowed, and follows Ortossi out. As she passes you, you catch the faint scent of Cosian jasmine still clinging to her tunic.
The council chamber is small, warm from a brazier. Maps of trade routes cover the table. Zoe removes her veil now that you are alone — her face is tired, younger than she allows anyone to see in public.
She pours two cups of wine herself — an unusual honor — and pushes one toward you.
"Speak plainly," she says, sitting. "No flattery. I have a thief merchant in my cells, two hired blades of Cernus, a captain who wants blood, and a slave girl who hid what she knew."
She sips, eyes sharp over the rim.
"Vartius offers me exclusive Cosian trade. If he speaks true, it could make this House rich. If he lies and I shelter him, Cernus will call it theft and come for us."
She sets the cup down hard.
"Counsel me. What would you do — with Vartius, with Cernus's men, and with Sara?"
The brazier crackles. Beyond the door, you can hear Ortossi's heavy boots pacing, and the soft, frightened breathing of Sara waiting in the antechamber.
Zoe is waiting for your answer.
A knock — three sharp raps.
Zoe frowns. "Enter."
Ortossi steps in, helmet under his arm. His face is grim.
"Forgive me, Mistress. The prisoner from Cernus — the one who knew the girl — he asks to speak with you alone. Says he will tell you where Vartius hid the true cargo, if you grant him..."
He hesitates, glancing at you.
"If you grant him Sara. As payment for his betrayal of Cernus."
From the antechamber comes a stifled gasp — Sara heard.
Zoe's hand tightens on her wine cup until her knuckles whiten. She looks at you, then at Ortossi.
" He dares to bargain for my property in my House?" she says quietly, but her voice trembles with fury. "And yet... if there is a true cargo — more than perfume and silk —"
Ortossi steps closer, lowering his voice. "Mistress, with respect — the girl lied by omission once. She is comely, but she is only one serving slave. If this man's information is true —"
Another soft sound from the antechamber. A sob, quickly muffled.
Zoe closes her eyes for a moment. When she opens them, she looks directly at you.
"Counselor. I will not sell a girl who has served me faithfully for a rumor. But I cannot ignore a chance to learn the truth."
She stands, pacing to the brazier.
"Tell me — shall I hear this man myself? Shall I let Ortossi... persuade him instead? Or shall I question Vartius first, before his fear cools?"
She waits. The fate of Sara, and perhaps of the House, hangs on your counsel.
Zoe does not wait for your words this time — she decides.
"Bring Vartius to me. Now. Not the cells — the small inquiry room. And bring Sara. She will look him in the eye when he speaks."
Ortossi nods sharply and goes.
Minutes later, you are in the narrow stone inquiry room below the hall. No windows. A single brazier. Chains hang from the wall, unused — for now.
Vartius is dragged in, his fine saffron robes torn, his oiled beard matted with sweat. He falls to his knees before Zoe.
"Lady! Lady, please —"
Sara is brought in last, by a young guardsman. She kneels in the corner, eyes downcast, trembling. She dares not look at Vartius.
Zoe stands over the merchant, her shadow long in the firelight. You stand at her right shoulder, as counsel.
"Vartius of Ar," she says coldly. "My counselor advises me not to trust pretty vials. So tell me plainly — what was the true cargo?"
Vartius swallows. His eyes dart to Sara, then away.
"I... I was only courier, Lady! Cernus — House Cernus — they traffic not in perfume, but in... in slaves. High-born girls, taken from fallen Houses, sold quietly to Turia! The perfume was cover!"
Sara's head snaps up, horrified.
"Lies!" comes a shout from the doorway — Ortossi has returned with the other prisoner, held by two guards. The captive grins through his broken nose.
"Ask the girl what her father was, Lady! Ask her why Cernus wants her back!"
All eyes turn to Sara. She is white as marble.
"Mistress, I—in
The steward of Cernus looks at Zoe's line — twelve spears, steady, unflinching, with Ortossi at their head like a wall of scarlet stone.
He looks at Zoe herself — chin high, dagger half-drawn, not blinking.
He laughs, but it's hollow.
"You are mad, woman. Cernus will not forget this."
"Cernus will remember," Zoe corrects coldly, "that the House of Zoe does not surrender its own."
For a long moment, no one moves. Then the steward spits in the dust, turns, and remounts.
"We will take the merchant and the perfume, and go. This time."
Ortossi nods to his men. Vartius is shoved forward — weeping with relief and terror — and the crate is loaded onto a spare tarn.
The captive, the one who knew Sara, is left kneeling in the dust.
Ortossi looks to Zoe. She gives a single, small nod.
Justice is swift. Warrior's justice.
The riders wheel and gallop away, leaving only dust and the morning sun.
Silence falls over the courtyard.
Then Zoe turns. Sara is standing in the gateway, the forgotten cloak still in her hands, staring.
"Come here, girl," Zoe says, more gently than you have ever heard her.
Sara approaches and kneels, trembling.
Zoe takes her own war cloak and drapes it around Sara's shoulders — covering the brief slave tunic, a shocking kindness.
"You lied to me about your blood," Zoe says. "For that, you will serve an extra Ahn in the kitchens each night for a month."
"Yes, Mistress," Sara whispers.
"But you served faithfully, and you did not betray my House to Cernus when you could have begged him to take you. For that... you remain mine. And I protect what is mine."
Sara looks up, tears falling freely now. "Thank you, Mistress."
Ortossi clears his throat, suddenly gruff. "Well. The girl has spirit. I'll... I'll see she learns the spear-drill signals, Mistress. So she knows when to take cover."
Zoe almost smiles. She looks at you.
"You counseled me to hold firm, counselor — even in your silence. My House stands because of it."
She extends her hand. On her palm: one small vial of Cosian perfume.
"For your service."
Behind you, the House breathes again.
