Melete on the Hunt

The rain-damp moss of the northern canopy was cool beneath Melete’s bare soles. High above the forest floor, she crouched on a massive, overhanging needle-tree branch, completely motionless. Her long dark hair was braided tight with twigs, leaves and strips of dried tabuk sinew to keep it from catching on the bark and hide its scent, though a few stray strands escaped and framed her face. Her tan skin, mottled with a paste of crushed berries and dark mud also to mask her scent, had her blended perfectly into the shifting shadows of the leaves.

Below her, the forest floor was silent, save for the steady drip of water from the recent storm. Melete narrowed her dark chocolate-colored eyes, the faint flecks of gold within them catching the dull light filtering through the canopy. She was on a solitary hunt, ahns away from the cave, and her target was close.

A faint rustle broke the quiet. Emerging from a thicket of vilo plants was an adult tabuk, its single spiraling horn gleaming in the dim light. The beast paused, its nostrils flaring as it tested the wind. But Melete had positioned herself flawlessly downwind; the air carried only the scent of wet pine and damp earth.

Slowly, without making a sound, Melete raised her Gorean short bow. Her muscles, lean and toned from winters of survival, flexed beneath her brief panther-skin camisole. She notched an arrow, its broadhead tip coated in a dark, sticky resin—a paralyzing forest toxin harvested from the nearby marshes.

She drew the cord back to her cheek, her gold-flecked eyes locked onto the soft skin just behind the tabuk’s shoulder blade. Her breathing was shallow, completely attuned to the rhythm of the woods. For a fraction of an ihn, the tabuk froze, as if sensing the invisible thread of danger stretching toward it.

Thwip.

The short bow snapped with a muffled click. The arrow streaked down through the canopy, striking the beast exactly where Melete had aimed. The tabuk reared back, letting out a sharp bleat of pain, and bolted into the brush.

Melete didn't rush. She knew the toxin would do its work within runs. Dropping silently from branch to branch with fluid, feline agility, her bare feet touched the forest floor without snapping a single twig. She unbuckled her heavy steel skinning knife from her leather utility belt and slipped into the shadows, tracking the faint trail of broken leaves left by her prey.

Within a hundred paces, she found the tabuk collapsed on a bed of ferns, its chest rising and falling slowly as the paralysis took hold. Kneeling beside the animal, she gave a whispered thank you for it’s life before she quickly finished it off with clean strike with her knife to dispatch it humanely.

The smell of fresh blood instantly altered the heavy forest air. Melete knew she was in a race against time. Prowling wild sleens or a swarm of flesh-eating jards could catch the scent at any moment. Working with practiced efficiency, she began to quarter the meat, preparing to pack it into her leather bags and hoist it into the high safety of the canopy before the forest's rival predators arrived.

Working with frantic efficiency, Melete packed the choice cuts of tabuk meat into her leather pouches, wrapping them tightly in broad, waxy vilo leaves to seal in the juices and trap the scent. She hoisted the remaining carcass high into the upper canopy of a needle-tree using a braided sinew rope, a necessary tithe to keep the forest’s prowling sleens occupied.

Shouldering her heavy pack, she slipped back into the shadows. Her bare feet moved across the damp forest floor like a phantom, leaving no trace for any trackers who might be patrolling the borders.

She did not head toward the high tree platforms of her former panther tribe though a small part of her longed to. Melete was an outcast now, a woman who had broken the ultimate law of the sisterhood.

As the sun dipped below the tree line, casting long, bloody shadows across the timberlands, Melete reached a jagged limestone ridge near the forest's edge. Hidden behind a heavy curtain of hanging briars and thick moss was the narrow mouth of a cave. She slipped inside, the sudden drop in temperature raising goosebumps on her bare tan skin.

Deep within the cavern, away from the drafts, a low fire smoldered in a dug-out pit, completely smokeless. Sitting cross-legged beside the coals was Scar, a Savage Warrior Heathen working on a fishing basket. He was a massive man, his chest marked by the traditional honors of his people, his face split by the jagged white lines that gave him his name. He had wandered far from the open prairies, a proud exile living in the shadows of the northern woods.

He looked up as she entered, his intense blue green eyes tracking her movements with a quiet intensity. He didn't speak; words were a luxury neither used lightly, most times they just weren’t needed.

Melete dropped the heavy leather pouches onto a flat stone slab near the fire. Her dark gaze met his across the dim, flickering light. There was no iron collar around her neck, and no bride-price of kaiila had ever been traded for her. In the eyes of Gorean law, their arrangement was an impossibility—a feral huntress and a savage sharing a hearth. Neither cared.

She knelt across from him, reaching for her skinning knife to slice the fresh tabuk meat, preparing to roast it over the hot stones. Scar reached across the space between them, his large, calloused hand gently catching her wrist. Melete froze, her panther instincts flaring for a fraction of an ihn, but she did not pull away. The silence of the cave wrapped around them, an unspoken understanding forged not by chains or laws, but by the raw necessity of survival and a strange, quiet bond that belonged only to them.
