I opened one eye, then the other, remaining upon the sleeping furs for a moment longer. Another day without him. I let out a quiet breath before turning my attention to the soft mewling sound coming from nearby. A faint, wispy smile touched my lips as I heard the little cub, and whatever thoughts had been occupying my mind were momentarily set aside. I had much to do today.
I rose with astonishingly with more ease than I had expected; Considering the bruising and wounds I had already carried from the Slaver and other encounters in the forest, not to mention the trouble I had taken in ridding it of those who had invaded and desecrated it with Etna and the girls. I was rather pleased with how well I felt. My body still bore the evidence of my recent encounters, but the soreness had lessened considerably, and I felt stronger than I had in days. I quickly leapt down from the sleeping platform, gathered the furs, and shook them out before straightening them neatly. With that done, I turned to the hearth, stirred the remaining coals, and added kindling until the flames began to catch. A few larger pieces of wood followed, bringing warmth back into the cave.
As the fire grew, I mentally worked my way through the list of things that needed doing while preparing something for the cub to eat. It amused me somewhat that I had begun referring to the little creature as Ember without giving the matter much thought. I certainly hadn’t intended to name it, and yet there I was, doing precisely that. I supposed I would have to think about that little problem another time.
There was no shortage of work awaiting me. I needed to gather more root vines and greenery, working them into the area surrounding the cave entrance. Winter would soon be upon the forest, and I wanted the opening concealed as thoroughly as possible before the weather turned. I had also to tend to the various meats I had hanging in the smoking area. The sleen, tarsk, bosk, and, yes, even the panther meat were nearly finished smoking and would need to be wrapped and properly stored before they spoiled. I had kept another of the larger barrels from the wagon, and after emptying it of the old furs it contained, I could use it to store the provisions. It would serve that purpose nicely and keep everything together and protected.
Perhaps, if I managed to get through all of that without finding myself distracted by one thing or another, I might even have time to put some of the grain from the two smaller barrels to use. There was enough of it to make bread, and I thought a fresh loaf would go rather well with the stew I had prepared the day before. The thought alone made my stomach rumble faintly.
It seemed I had managed to find myself quite a list of chores, which suited me just fine. There was comfort in having useful things to occupy my hands and mind. The forest was still mine to tend, the cave still mine to keep, and there was a small, hungry creature depending upon me. For now, that was more than enough to get me through the day as it was the nights that seemed never ending filled with longing and of my missing him.
