An occasional “One Size Fits All” Gorean Home?

In Bianciella’s “Gorean Harshness” blog, Àirlia raised the suggestion:

“I wonder... if just maybe... all of us Goreans who want to enjoy realistic Gorean Roleplay, harshness and all could agree to just for a short time to try it out and could forget for a bit what homes they belong to and roleplay all as ONE city, of course not one already in use as it is an experiment. Vote three men in charge & the rest of us obey the set rules & go for it, no holds barred, and no running from the scariness of the situation. It's a good idea, but I honestly doubt it would happen.”

I replied, “Further to what Àirlia talked of. Aneesha raised this idea some years ago and We had a discussion in Helisto this evening and the consensus was that a combined Gor room that A/all in Gor attended twice a month and in which A/all played T/their roles - initially at least without an HoC or even a location on Gor - would be an initiative worth exploring, What do O/others think of that idea??”

Penelope then responded, “Regarding Your suggestion, would the "one size fits all” room be a hold, village, city? Mainland or island? Advanced or not so much in technology? Castes or no castes? And when Ya say everyone would practice their caste, what happens if ALL get together and half just sit about? Is there a penalty or learning ops available? If there is no governmental system, who would enforce order? (Respectfully queried) ~ Penelope Z”

I've moved this discussion to a new thread .....

I suggest we base this home in Rarir, which is a small village on the Thassa about a hundred pasang north of Brundisium and 200 pasang south west of the Thassa Cartius that gives access to the Vosk. So it’s well situated geographically for roleplay purposes. It’s quite a cosmopolitan and ‘advanced’ village, having a small harbour and being close to trade routes.

The Free who enter that room are the Warriors, Builders, Scribes, Physicians, Merchants etc. of that home and their slaves remain their slaves. Initially, at least, there’s no need for an “HoC”, it would more likely be a “Head Man” anyway and he can be referred to ‘obliquely’ ... “I’ll raise that with the Head Man”. If this idea seems to be working and is well supported then some kind of election can be held. There’s no need for anybody to change their Buzzen name for the days this home will open, though it might be fun to do so.

Of course there will be differences in outlook between the “mixed bag” of Free that come together there, but I’d hope some leeway and common sense would prevail. As to “harshness”, well, let’s see how that works out.

Initially this room could open every other week and then see how it goes. For it to work I think we’ll need most, if not all, of the homes to participate as there are few enough of us as it is!

Comments please.

Damn your writtings hard to read for these old eyes ,after trying a few times i think i get it .its a good idea in principle but could all the egos and dislkes be put aside to do r.p together? One can only hope so,and with this many different castes and chars in one room doing a r.p hows that gonna work out and whos gonna decide what the r.p will consist of? Lots to ponder ,the meet and greets have been good as many got to know each other better than before.if it can be done thats good.

I remember doing this once in MSN with Perrin. It was a city that was opened and people milled about and played out stories that others just picked up on to create role play. It was actually a lot of fun, though I'm left to wonder why it didn't last. I can't speak for my home, but I am intrigued.

I am in! As for egos and dislikes, well, let's be grown ups and put them aside, though Talarius, you are right it would be kinda fun to enter the common room roleplay as someone else whom none knew at first whom the other is. Sadly that would be to tempting to them who don't exactly follow the already set rules and might be seen as an okay to duel even more than some have before. Either way, I look forward to seeing if this idea pans out.

This sounds like World of Gor using GCN that hardly anyone has used. Judas and Ludo came up with that.

Here is why it won't work... Quite frankly, we can't get along as a community in a setting where we barely encounter each other in role play, but you expect us to get along in the same room, with a set of universal rules, and there be minimal drama? I hate to say it, but I'm out before it even starts. Too much laziness, back stabbing, drama and confusion to top it off.

I would love to see if it would work. couldn't hurt, could it?

Been saying the same thing for 10 years. even created a server to meet this idea, Every One wanted it then No One went there. World of Gor. A few put a lot of hours in creating it , all for nothing. If You don't believe Me then check here >http://theworldofgor.webs.com/index.htm

This is My first time hearing of "World of Gor". Thanks for the commlink, Judas. Talarius, while on the outside it seems a simple solution to increasing roleplay opportunities AND getting exposure to more people, and I'd be game on trying, ultimately there will be those that balk at something that is too strict or harsh or alien to Them that messes up the concept. It's just the way Earthlings are.

My worry is it will be a room where everyone just goes to discuss what is wrong with Gor or what we should, could or would have done. There would be limited r/p as there is now. It would be like the meet and greets of gor that has taken place. You can only meet and greet so much. The role play has to start someplace. I'm searching that place still. I know there are really good r/pers out there that have so much to give. I will find that place sometime. :)

I recall the alternate GCN server that was created and some of the discussions around it. I also remember the pitch that was put forward... agree in principle to how things should vaguely be... but don't sweat the details now... we'll figure it out later. With terms like that I can understand why many were reluctant to show up and ultimately chose not to participate. A similar project, with detailed decisions of how it is going to be made up front, may be a better sell.

How's about instead of a a trip down memory lane discussing things which none of us can change we focus on the things we can change and influence? Talarius, this is a good idea IMO and has merit. I also agree with Warren that the foundations should be planned out in advance so everyone is aware of what they are getting involved in. My suggestion would be to vote for a small council to set up the location, rules etc etc as there will always be a requirement for leadership and I prefer democracy

MemberJun 30, 2016 7:22 AM

Rather than a dictatorship which will likely end up badly for some. An odd number, 3 or 5 people so that votes can't be tied and a HoC to have the deciding vote in case of a tie. It would also then be worth a timeline of events for everyone to see of what is happening and where so we all have notice of when these things will be up and running.

WarrenJun 30, 2016 8:08 AM

The forgotten past can often have a future twin, so though it should not be the focus of current discussion nor need it be harped on, it is best it not be absent. Anyway, the current ideas have merit as you say. It may also be a good idea to have some limits on how long, or how often in a row, particular persons cay be part of the council, so that some rotation of leadership is forced, to help in staving off a dictatorship.

WarrenJun 30, 2016 8:11 AM

Also, with a council of that size, if the members are able to abstain from voting, a tie could still easily result even with an odd size. Some sort of method to resolve that possibility might be handy.

draw straws or flip a coin .

I think you need to get away from the council idea. It will be the same people running the show yet again. I agree that there needs to be rules that all should abide by while roleplaying, but the council idea isn't, in my opinion, a good idea because as I said there will be the same few trying to dictate everything.

MemberJun 30, 2016 3:33 PM

Is that not why you have a council voted so everyone has a chance to elect those who they think will be good in the role? Not that I'm precious either way.

MemberJul 1, 2016 2:26 AM

I agree with Kyri. I think a council is going to only serve a one sided home or group. The one with the most members has the most votes, etc.... I think if there are people worth investing into role play and just do it, it will grow a lot faster. Rules have been set by each home which from roaming are pretty similar in every place here in buzzen. I find it more interesting those who comes to the blogs and talk, but aren't seen around gor. Perhaps it is just my timing......

MemberJul 1, 2016 2:28 AM

Different time zones perhaps? I don't see half the people who speak on issues in a room. I've not met Warren in role play. I've seen Robak a few times. I haven't yet met Kyri. I saw her come into Lydius once. I have not met sevda. I have role played a small amount with Wamph. I have role played a great deal with Penelope, Bart, and a few times with Dahna, etc.... There are many out here that want to role play yet like myself, peek online, no one around, then goes off to do something ...

MemberJul 1, 2016 2:30 AM

more... It would be better to see what times people are around and try to match those times. Some work during the days, some at night. Some are in different time zones which conflict with others time zones. Some peek in only to blog, then pop right out. The true issue is who is willing to actually r/p and interact with others? Where are all of you who want r/p? What is the best time for me to interact with you? Let me know, I can try my best to join in.
